January Board meeting of Madison chapter

Wild Ones Madison members will be hosting this event to help you design your yard and plan your planting from start to finish. Whether you are brand new and are starting completely from scratch, or experienced with landscaping and just want some specific advice, we are here to help. 

There will be several stations including vision planning and inspiration (if you don’t know what you want, but know you want something, we will help you figure out what you can do); mapping your yard and creating a design plan; site preparation, plant selection, and a resource table for all auxiliary materials.

Phil Gaebler, City of Madison Department of Engineering, will discuss the importance of urban rain gardens and incentives that the city has in place. We anticipate approximately 20 people in attendance from our membership as well as the general public. This presentation will be about 45 minutes with time for Q&A at the end.

This event was hosted by Wild Ones member Frank Hassler, owner of Good Oaks Ecological Landscaping. It involved a hike through the woodlands at the Arboretum to look for skunk cabbage and other spring ephemerals as well as discuss the restoration work that has been done in the different ecosystems.

Join us for all, or just one part of this event, we will be meeting back at the main shelter at Hoyt Park for each. For the picnic, bring yourself, bring a lunch for yourself and food to share if you’d like.

Come and see pasque flower, prairie smoke, buttercups, violets and more. This walk will include over a mile of hiking, including on steep and rough terrain.

Meet at the parking lot for Empire Prairies State Natural Area - Westport Drumlin Prairie at the high point on Bong Road east of Waunaukee.

The Heritage Sanctuary is famous for a carpet of great white trillium in the spring. These small east-side hidden gems have a great diversity of spring wildflower to enjoy.

Meet at the west side of Heritage Heights Park, on Meadowlark Drive, Madison.

Whether you are brand new or experienced with landscaping and just want some specific advice, we are here to help.
There will be books, plant lists, and volunteer experts available to help with vision, planning, and inspiration (if you don’t know what you want, but know you want something, we will help you figure out what you can do); mapping your yard and creating a design plan; site preparation, and plant selection.
Two time slots - 6:00pm-6:50pm and 7pm-7:50pm (15 spots per time slot)
$10 for Wild Ones members

Note: If you attend this event, we ask that you take photos and measurements of your yard and existing or planned beds soon, before the snow comes. It will also make it much easier for us to help you with your property if we can see exactly how it looks! Consider taking your photos when it is sunny, so we can see where shade and sun areas will fall.
